There's no single "best month" for Malaysia — the honest answer depends entirely on where you're going. It's a long, geographically varied country where the west coast, east coast, and Borneo experience their monsoons at genuinely different times of year, which is actually good news: there's almost always somewhere in the country having good weather.
West Coast (Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi, Penang)
Best: December to April. This side of the peninsula is shielded during the Northeast Monsoon (roughly November to March), making it the driest window of the year here. It's good year-round, but this stretch has the least rain and the most reliable sunshine — and it's when most UK visitors choose to travel, which is worth knowing if you'd rather avoid the busiest crowds.
East Coast (Perhentian, Redang, Tioman)
Best: March to October. This coast takes the brunt of the Northeast Monsoon, and many island resorts close entirely from November to February — ferries stop running and beaches become genuinely unsuitable for a holiday. If an island-hopping trip to the east coast is the plan, avoid the winter months altogether.
Malaysian Borneo (Sabah & Sarawak)
Best: March to October. Borneo is rainforest, so rain happens year-round regardless of season — but it's driest, and best for wildlife-spotting (orangutans, pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys), outside the November–January wettest stretch.
If You're Visiting the Whole Country
Spring — March to April — is the closest thing to a single best window, since it works reasonably well across west coast, east coast, and Borneo simultaneously. If your trip spans multiple regions, this is the safest bet for consistently decent weather throughout.
Festivals Worth Planning Around
Malaysia's multicultural calendar means there's usually a festival happening somewhere. Chinese New Year (late January–February) and Hari Raya (dates shift each year, following the Islamic calendar) both bring vibrant celebrations, but also busier flights, higher hotel prices, and some businesses closing for the holiday — worth checking the dates against your travel window either to join in or to plan around.
